Organic, Fairtrade and regenerative programmes are sold as proof. For Southern smallholders they are often recurring cost. The missing layer is origin-owned readiness data — not another verifier — so the file, the margin and the path to the eater can stay at the farm.
FAO already published a farm-level MRV protocol for soil organic carbon. Raising organic matter is stewardship; selling the tonne into a hostile voluntary market is often capture — auditors, methodologies and issuance have been shown, repeatedly, not to represent real reductions.
West African cocoa already faces drought and rainfall extremes that threaten yields. The EUDR maps that will police those same landscapes cannot tell shade-grown agroforestry from the forest beside it — and Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire have already shown the plot-level alternative.
